P.M. Dawn was an American hip hop group that emerged in the early 1990s with a unique and innovative style of music. Their debut album, Of the Heart, of the Soul and of the Cross: The Utopian Experience, was released in 1991 and became a critical and commercial success. The album featured soulful vocals, stream-of-consciousness raps, and eclectic samples that blended hip hop, pop, R&B, and psychedelic influences. In this article, we will explore the background, singles, and legacy of this groundbreaking album.

Background

P.M. Dawn consisted of brothers Attrell Cordes (also known as Prince Be) and Jarrett Cordes (also known as DJ Minutemix). They grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey, and were influenced by a variety of musical genres, such as rock, soul, new wave, and reggae. They began making music in their basement using a four-track recorder and a drum machine. They adopted the name P.M. Dawn, which stood for "Prince Minutemix Dusk and Nocturnal" .

In 1989, they released their first single, "Ode to a Forgetful Mind", on Warlock Records, but it went unnoticed in the US. However, the single caught the attention of Gee Street Records in the UK, who remixed and marketed it to rave reviews from music critics. Gee Street signed P.M. Dawn and brought them to London in 1990 to record tracks for an album. However, the label faced bankruptcy during the recording and sold P.M. Dawn's contract to Island Records . Island issued a few more singles in the UK before releasing Of the Heart, of the Soul and of the Cross: The Utopian Experience as P.M. Dawn's debut album in September 1991.

Singles

The album spawned four hit singles that showcased P.M. Dawn's diverse musical palette and lyrical themes. The first single was "A Watcher's Point of View (Don't 'Cha Think)", which sampled James Brown's "Funky Drummer" and featured a rap by Prince Be about his spiritual quest and existential doubts . The second single was "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss", which sampled Spandau Ballet's "True" and featured a cameo by Spandau Ballet singer Tony Hadley in the music video . The song was a dreamy and nostalgic ode to a lost love that became P.M. Dawn's signature hit and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in November 1991 . It was also the first number one song on the chart following the introduction of Nielsen SoundScan to the singles charts .

The third single was "Paper Doll", which was one of the early singles Island released in the UK to test the waters for the band . The song was a catchy and upbeat pop tune that contrasted with Prince Be's dark and introspective lyrics about his insecurities and fears of rejection . The song peaked at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early 1992 . The fourth single was "Reality Used to Be a Friend of Mine", which sampled Bob Marley's "Johnny Was" and featured a rap by Prince Be about his disillusionment with reality and his preference for fantasy . The song reached number 29 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in February 1992 .

Legacy

Of the Heart, of the Soul and of the Cross: The Utopian Experience received widespread acclaim from music critics, who praised P.M. Dawn's originality, creativity, and musicality. The album was ranked among the best albums of 1991 by several publications, such as Rolling Stone , Spin , NME , and Melody Maker . The album also influenced many artists who followed in P.M. Dawn's footsteps, such as De La Soul , Arrested Development , Outkast , and Kanye West . The album sold 850,000 copies by 1993 and has sold one million copies to date .
